Hi Jo! I didn't realize how long it had been since I last wrote. Here's the update:
Ruby has a new Collie friend. He came from Kings Valley Collies in Oregon two years ago and is a rescue himself. His breeder, Leslie Rappaport, got him back from Seattle Purebred where he'd been owner-surrendered. When I got him he was 51/2 years old, 55lbs, severely depressed, anorexic, anxious, and had abandonment issues galore. I named him My bonny Prince Charlie, "Prince", and have been working with him for almost two years now. Ruby and he got along very well right from the start. He grew up with cats and just left her alone. Then, at Thanksgiving that same year I rescued a poor Siamese who was wandering around out here at the apartments. Had I not gotten her inside when I did she would have died! I kid you not. When I picked her up she weighed nothing in my hands. I got her vetted, fed, warm, brushed and combed, and introduced her to Queen Ruby and the heir Prince. I ended up naming her Yum-Yum. Ruby and Yum-Yum are the best of friends, chasing each other around the apartment and then curling up together with Yummers grooming Ruby. Yum-Yum is a traditional sealpoint applehead with blue crossed eyes and a short very crooked tail. They each torment the poor dog by getting under the couch and attacking his tail! Yum-Yum LOVES to play with her toys in the bath and has taught Ruby how to play with practically any toy. She (Yummers) is also VERY athletic and taught Ruby how to get up on my bookshelves and stuff. I had to get out the squirt bottle! Two squirts and they both keep their paws off the shelves anymore. Yum-Yum HATES going out on lead, but it is one of Ruby favorite activities- she loves going out with her big brother Prince.
Speaking of going out- royalty is calling, right here at my elbow, demanding to out and Walkies. Better get the leash out and get Prince walked before I'm demoted!

It is with a heavy heart that I write today, Jo. On the 30th of April, early in the morning, my sweet, sweet Collie-girl Ladybug died. Ruby and I miss her terribly. Ruby wonders where her really neat Collie tail and leg feathers have gotten off to. She truly enjoyed playing with Ladybug's hair. I miss my constant friend and companion. We are both coping as best we can.
On the third of May we moved into our new apartment. I have finally gotten Ruby a cat-tree and she loves it! Imagine- sitting on a carpeted shelf and watching the birdies! Wonder of wonders! She doesn't like the sisal stuff, though. Blech! she says. This stuff isn't good enough for a Cat like Me! She has also been enjoying all the boxes and packing paper all over the house as it makes wonderful hiding places and really cool noises, respectively.
Ruby has been learning the Art of Going Out on the Patio on a Harness and Lead, too. She's a very quick study! And I have learned that it might be a good idea to NOT get another kitty- she has run off the two (loose) upstairs kitties when they come down the steps and she is out there.
Well, that's most of the news here. I am actively searching for another Collie and will introduce them when I can. I'll write more later when I have news.

It was so nice to see you at the Dog-gone Easter egg hunt today, Jo! I was going to come up to the Cat House today, but then realized the egg hunt was happening and that you may be at Rainer Vista Park instead. We should have something like that for kitties.... hmmmm..... Wonder how that would work!
After I got home Ruby asked the both of us where we had been and what we had been doing and what we saw and who was there and, more importantly, WHY she was left at home again! I had to spin her feather toy for a while and then she curled up next to me for a nap.
Anyway, just wanted to let you know how pleasantly surprised I was to see you! Keep up the good Kitty work!

Just another update, Jo. Ruby is STILL driving me nuts! ;) She won't play with any of the expensive toys I've bought for her amusement, preferring instead to pester me until I give in an spin her mousy or her feather for her. Silly kitty! She was very interested in the goldfish until she realized that it was IN water..... :p
Speaking of water- I've never had a cat that would come in after me and drink up the puddles in the sink or bath before. I guess she thinks it tastes rather like champagne or something.
She also insists on PLAYING in the litter box after I've replaced all the litter. I end up with litter all over the place and a tired kitty!
Foods I've discovered she likes: little itty bitty tidbits of liverwurst; tiny bites of roast beef; and popcorn. Yes- popcorn. Not to eat, though. Seems it is yet another item that makes a Most Excellent Toy!
Anyway- just letting you know how she's doing. We might be moving to another apartment soon and I will let you know how that goes. Thanks again for such a good match Jo! Ruby is the cat's meow!

RUBY GOT OUT IN HER FIRST SNOW AND DID NOT LIKE IT ONE BIT! ;) I HELD HER AND TOOK HER OUTSIDE, BUT SHE WANTED NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT STRANGE COLD STUFF FALLING OUT OF THE SKY! SHE CONTINUES TO DRIVE ME NUTS BY REFUSING TO PLAY WITH THE TOYS I BUY FOR HER, PLAYING INSTEAD WITH WADDED UP PAPER. SHE HAS ALSO STARTED TORMENTING MY POOR COLLIE-GIRL BY SNEAKING UP ON HER AND POUNCING. LADYBUG IS TOO MUCH OF A LADY TO RETALIATE. TODAY RUBY ATTACKED LADYBUG'S TAIL FEATHERS AS SHE WALKED OUT THE DOOR. KITTIES! RUBY HAS SETTLED IN AND IS HERE TO STAY!! YAY!!!!

Hi Jo. Just another update on Ruby. The Royal Canin Siamese 38 agrees with her right well. And she gets half a can once a week for her skin and coat- Ladybug eats any of the leftovers! To encourage water consumption I have downloaded "Aquarium" on my computer and let it play all day. The bubbling sounds seem to remind her that she should get another drink of water. When Ruby first came home she stayed in my bedroom and slept on my bed with me. Then she found my rocking chair. I have put a wool blanket on the seat for her to curl up in. Recently she discovered that the back of the couch is a most excellent place! And yesterday- well, yesterday I found her in the bathroom sink. Go figure! She looked up at me as if to say, "Hey! Isn't this a groovy place?!" I laughed and laughed and told her she was a silly kitty. She looked smug. I'm getting her used to a harness. But I have to admit that I'm not sure if I will ever take her outside. She seems like the type of kitty who MIGHT like to escape out the door once she gets a taste of the Outdoors. She gets VERY curious when I let Ladybug out to do her business and I have to be very careful that she stays put. Then she runs off to attack a mouse or something.
Well, now she's complaining I'm not paying any attention to her. I'd better go and spend some time with the Princess!

UPDATE: Ruby met Maggie. Maggie don't like! I've never seen her hiss at anyone before. Maybe she knew that Ruby is my new kitty...... Ruby got her boosters and a clean bill of health. I have had to switch her food from Felidae to Royal Canin Siamese 38. The Felidae made her VERY gassy! I've bought her all sorts of toys, but her fav is still the mouse-on-a-string you sent home with her. She and Ladybug are getting along better now. Ruby's no longer concerned that Ladybug will eat her. They even ALMOST play together now. Ruby will be playing and come up to Ladybug and they will sniff noses. Then Ruby whirls and runs away, off to find her mousy! She is still very talkative and lets me know all the current gossip in our apartment. Mostly she complains that Ladybug hogs the blankets and such. ; ) Well, I must go spin the mouse-on-a-string for Princess Ruby before I'm fired!

Jo- Letting you know that Belle has a new name. She is now Ruby because all I could think of when I looked in her eyes was "Dorothy's ruby slippers". She is getting her boosters on the first and has an appointment for a general check-up on the 5th. She is fitting in very well. Although Ladybug is getting fed up with Ruby eating her dog food! ; ) I am enjoying being awakened by her in the mornings. She loves getting up on the bed and meowing at me, hurrying me along. Ruby is a very playful kitty and chases her mice and paper ball all over the house. And she LOVES the toy you sent home with her. I just had to let you know how she is doing. I Love her very much. Thank you Jo for letting me bring this kitty into my home and heart.
Bonnie (and Ladybug)
PS- Ruby will be meeting Miss Maggie at the vets!
